Hawaii Foster Youth Coalition : Fun Stuff
Local Chapter Meetings
• Local Chapter Meetings are a chance for our members to not only get to know one another, but to communicate with each other about their experiences in the foster care system, and other important issues. With meetings begining to start up all over the state, the Hawaii Foster Youth Coalition local chapters are being revived, and although members are hard to come by, the coalition staff are making an effort to recruit as many members as they can. All chapter meetings are fun and productive, and our staff make it a point to feed and entertain the youths involved. Remember, everything is free, and once you attend, you are a member!
The Summer Leadership Institute
• The Summer Leadership Institute was held July 28th to the 31st at the Hawaii State Capitol Building. Foster youth statewide attended a four day workshop and learned leadership and presentation skills to prepare them for future projects.
• Say we'd like to do more for potential leaders
Pride and DHS Trainings
• Pride Trainings
Pride trainings are for potential foster families that want to learn how to be effective foster parents. Foster youth who have transitioned out of the foster care system share their personal experiences in foster care and discussed what worked and didn't work in their foster homes.
• DHS Trainings
DHS trainings are for current and potential social workers to learn directly from the foster youth what it takes to be effective social workers.
Legislation
• Talk about bills that have actually passed and how to implement them • Ones in the works that will benefit foster children • Know your rights handbook in the making (our deadline end of October = ready for distribution is our goal) • Section on website too.
